The history of the pension's building
The building in which the Mariana Pension is, was built in 1907 by K. Breihofer, who was pharmacist, so the building was used as a home, pharmacy and hospital. During 1920-1947, after being bought from S. Conard, a nobleman from Bazna, the building became the possession of the Kinn family, a family from the merchandisers' guild, who used it as a manor house.
The building has been entirely renovated, but the initial architectural structure was kept as it was when the building was built (1907). Made by a team of professionals, the renovation lasted for two and a half years, the result being a building that combines Saxon traditional elements with modern elements.
The history of the resort
The Bazna locality was mentioned for the first time in 1270, year in which the king Stephan the 3rd gave a domain to a nobleman from the Bazna village. The first documentary certification of the Bazna locality happened on February 18th 1302, fact which has been noted in a document of that time, which shows that a monastery from Oradea confirms that a Saxon nobleman had donated the Bazna locality to a catholic church.
Also, Rudolf Rothens, in Memorabilae Europae (1749), mentions Bazna by referring to the mineral waters which can be found in this locality, and Dr. Klaus, in the study called Healing springs from the Austrian monarchy, referred to the healing effect that the water from Bazna had.
Due to the discovery of natural gases, salted water springs and iodide water springs in this area, the attention of the Transylvanian scientists was attracted at that time to this little settlement, and so the healing value of the mineral springs from Bazna became known since the 18th century. The priest Andreas Gaspari, between the years 1762-1779, wrote different studies that were the foundation for later researches, describing more healing springs, which we called "The church's bath", "The beggars' bath" or "The sacred fountain".
In 1814, the Evangelic-Lutheran Church took over the mineral lakes, deciding to build a spa. In 1843, a joint stock company from Medias began the systematic exploitation of the baths. In 1905, the Evangelic community from Bazna took over the resorts, making it the "pearl of the Transylvanian baths". From 1949, the Bazna Baths were administrated by the Healthy Minister, becoming a spa, with a permanent character.
